May 14: Burgers and Brews for the Bay

It may not have been the sunniest of Saturdays, but boy was it a delicious one. Returned after a two-year hiatus, the popular Burgers and Brews for the Bay brought local foodie families, beer lovers, and farm fans to Snail of Approval winner Claggett Farm’s annual fundraiser.

SFDC’s own Mark Haskell was one of the local chefs offering delectable sliders. In his case, the mini burgers made from Claggett’s own heritage breed ground beef were topped with pickled peppers and a homemade (and downright irresistible) collard and rhubarb sauce. Washed down with a bit of local beer, it lasted just long enough to get me to the next stop: pork carnitas sliders from Snail winning P.A. Bowen, conveniently housed next to another local brewery’s libation stand.

A slice of pizza still bubbling from the oven — hey, we’re clearly not purists about it only being burgers and brews here — followed while we watched a demonstration of how different types of soil hold rainwater, then a hayride over to the sheep petting area. After a good hand wash, it was time for another couple of burgers and brews. We capped off the day with rootbeer floats with, you guessed it, local ice cream and root beer. What a great way to celebrate good food while supporting conservation and responsible agriculture!
