Snail of Approval Awards 2026
Snail of Approval Awardees stand together and smile at the Snail of Approval Awards Party, April 2026.
Celebrating Good, Clean, and Fair Food
This spring, food lovers, farmers, chefs, and community advocates gathered at Little Penn in Washington, DC for one of our communities’ most inspiring celebrations of local food: Slow Food DC's 2026 Snail of Approval Awards.
The biennial event recognizes businesses and organizations across the District, Maryland, and Virginia that embody Slow Food's core values of good, clean, and fair food. More than an award, the Snail of Approval highlights the people and businesses working every day to build a food system in the DMV that prioritizes sustainability, community, transparency, and integrity.
This year's gathering was equal parts awards ceremony, community reunion, and celebration of the local food movement. Guests enjoyed a buffet-style dinner featuring Turkish cuisine from Dolmama (@dolmamafoods), connected with fellow advocates of sustainable food, participated in a silent auction supporting Slow Food DC's mission, and celebrated a remarkable group of award recipients.
Honoring the 2026 Snail of Approval Awardees
The 2026 cohort showcased the diversity and strength of the DMV food community:
Ama (@amarestaurant.bar) is a mission-driven, all-day dining destination dedicated to the nourishment of its guests, its community and its planet. Led by wife-and-husband duo Johanna Hellrigl & Micah Wilder, Ama becomes an energetic aperitivo bar over the course of the afternoon and convivial ristorante by night. The result is a warm and transportive community anchor celebrating the joyful simplicities of Italian culture meant for every mood and moment.
The Farm at Our House (@thefarmatourhouse) is a certified organic vegetable farm in Brookeville, Maryland supporting our community through locally grown and accessible produce. TFOH’s mission is to create a model of a certified organic farm that nourishes our community and land. TFOH’s team believes true sustainability means caring for our soil, our employees, and our community with equal measures.
Teaism (@teaism_dc) is a longtime Washington institution committed to thoughtful tea culture, healthy food, and creating welcoming spaces that connect people through shared meals and traditions. Teaism was founded in 1996 with the goal of making exquisite loose leaf tea accessible to all.
Poplar (@poplarkennedy) is a ‘hyper-seasonal’ restaurant that features foraged ingredients Spring through Fall and purchases other items directly from local farms and esteemed purveyors. Chef Iulian seeks out the most astounding ingredients and offers small and medium size plates that showcase them.
River-Sea Chocolates (@riverseachocolates) are exquisite chocolatiers whose story starts where the Amazon River meets the Atlantic sea, building a bridge between our community in Northern Virginia and their family and friends growing cacao in the tropics. By getting their cacao beans directly from the farmers, River-Sea ensures the highest sustainability and ethical standards at every step of process, letting the environment and people thrive while crafting the most delicious chocolate.
Together, these recipients demonstrate that excellence in food extends far beyond what appears on the plate. Their work reflects the broader values that Slow Food seeks to elevate: environmental stewardship, cultural connection, support for local economies, and meaningful engagement with their communities.
More Than an Awards Ceremony
What makes the Snail of Approval unique is its grassroots, holistic approach. Unlike awards that focus solely on culinary achievement, Slow Food DC evaluates recipients across multiple dimensions, including sourcing practices, environmental impact, community involvement, staff support, cultural connection, and business values. Furthermore, nominations from this award are all from local individuals who participate and care about the local food system in the DMV.
Throughout the evening, speakers emphasized that building a more resilient food system requires collaboration among farmers, restaurateurs, producers, and consumers alike. The stories shared by this year's awardees illustrated how intentional choices—whether supporting regional agriculture, preserving culinary traditions, reducing waste, or investing in employees—can create lasting positive impact. It’s been more important than ever in recent times for us all to contribute and support our fellow community members, and supporting each other through our food choices is powerful.
Building Community Around Food
One of the most memorable aspects of the evening was the sense of community in the room. Attendees represented many corners of the DMV food ecosystem, from longtime Slow Food supporters to first-time guests eager to learn more about the movement.
Conversations flowed easily between courses as guests exchanged ideas, celebrated local successes, and discussed the challenges and opportunities facing sustainable food systems today. The event served as a reminder that food is not only nourishment but also a powerful tool for connection.
Looking Ahead
As Slow Food DC continues its work championing good, clean, and fair food for all, the 2026 Snail of Approval Awards offered a hopeful glimpse of what is possible when businesses align their practices with their values. We encourage DMV residents to support Snail of Approval Award winners. Here’s a Google Map of our Snail of Approval winners (endearingly referred to as ‘Snails’) in the area.
Congratulations to this year's recipients and to the many farmers, producers, chefs, and advocates who contribute to a stronger, more equitable local food system. Their efforts make our region more delicious, more sustainable, and more connected.
Here's to another year of celebrating food that is good for people, good for communities, and good for the planet!
